Fiji is now sleeping on his sandy perch. I don't want him to because i know it's not too good for his foot skin. It's not the highest perch either!! Could it be cold in the upper back corner of his cage?
Both of my boys have always slept on a sandy perch. It does not matter where I put it and what else is in the cages. I have never had any foot problems. The only other place that one of mine sleeps is on the floor in the corner. That scares me everytime I take off the cover in the morning.

My parrotlets sleep on rope perches too. If you put the rope perches higher than the other perches, he might sleep there. I don't use the sandy perches for my parrotlets. I think they're too rough. They have a nice cement one, and also trim their own toenails w/ their beaks. If only my sun conure would go on his cement perch. His nails are getting long. Maybe he needs a sandy perch!

Mine trim their toenails with their beaks to. Is that a common thing? It's great isn't it. .My little guys don't sleep on sandy perches but hang out sometimes on the ones I have for the keets, they don't chew their nails, nice and long.:eek:Ollie the ekkie sleeps on them and doesn't have any food problems. I also file his nails with a nailfile because even with the sandy perch they are a bit long and sharp.

Chipper sleeps on a round piece of wood with holes in it with wood toys hanging from it, ha.
I have no idea about the perch, seems OK. You can check the feet. He just like it there. Do you have lots of choices?
I took this pic. after a nap we had. She loves to nap in her cage while my doggie and I nap in my bed.

Kermit and Kiwi each have a cement perch in their cages. I've only had Kermit a week, so don't know how much he sits on it yet, but Kiwi uses hers now and then. She scrapes her beak and her toenails get scraped a little. This cement perch is flat and no roughness to it on the top, so it doesn't hurt their skin. I got it at Drs. Foster and Smith, and now my bird shop carries them too.
Their cement perches aren't the highest in their cages, so they don't sleep on them. I fixed the cages so one of their Booda perches is highest -- nice and soft and comfy for sleeping. They each have a Birdie Binkie too, for something soft to cuddle up with, and they both seem to like them.
Make sure they have a variety of other perches to choose from - wooden in different diameters, Manzanita, rope, Booda (I think they like these the best -- easy to grip), and others. I also have a little wooden flat corner "shelf" for Kiwi so she can stand on something flat once in a while to give her feet a rest, rather than perching and griping. My husband made it and he's already got a request to make one for Kermit!

For the past year that we have had Fiji he has slept on his rope perch by his snuggly green guy. I put the rope as the highest perch for his comfort. I did an experiment last night. i thought that perhaps it was not warm enough on the back of the cage - i moved the cage forward so i could be sure to get the back insulated. i'll see this morning if he decided to sleep up high again.

My Herbie has a little birdie tent that he sleeps in every night. He loves it. Climbs in and puffs up all big. He hangs his little butt out too, so he doesn't poop in it. Cutest thing ever.
