I read online that it's bad to feed a parrotlet avacado.
Is this true?
What are the harmful effects?

Yes it is . I am unsure of what is in the avacado that makes it harmful.

The harmful effects can include death, so I really wouldn't recommend feeding avocado to a bird. Have you been?

There is something in avocado that is toxic to birds. Probably it does not cause death since I have heard of people not knowing and feeding it a time or two. The toxic effects may be cumulative, and since vets say do not feed, I stick with that to be safe.

Pretty much every bird site out there has some sort of msg saying: No chocolate, no avocado, no teflon pans, no febreeze. There's just something toxic in them. What? i don't know.

No airwick, no febreeze no nothing similar to the sort. Yes, it sucks big time... i myself use febreeze on furniture and what not all the time... so it's beenhard not to use it.. but it's toxic to birds. Look for nontoxic air fresheners and place them about your house, or baking soda. that works too. In my guinea pig cages i use baking powder to help keep the smell down, and it has helped a little.
My friend Justine has linnies and one of her birds actually had a seizure from febreeze. A room mate of hers was a toad, and sprayed it in Justine's room where the bird was, just to be spiteful.... Thank God the Telieu is ok... but yes, febreeze is bad.

Birds' respiratory systems are so sensitive, far more than human's (remember the canary in the coal mine method of determining whether there were poisonous gases?). They can be killed by the fumes from non-stick cookware when the pan reaches a temperature of around 435 degrees. Any chemicals sprayed in the air, strong cleaners used on floors, etc. are dangerous for birds.

It's my understanding that all air fresheners, candles, sprays, carpet powders with a scent are toxic to birds. Baking soda is a natural cleaner that has great uses in freshening carpets and air.

I've heard most things with a strong scent can be harmful, but the lady who owns the store where I got Echo told me she's burned incense in her home for decades, around all different kinds of birds, and none of them have ever had a problem. Still, if you can live without scented stuff, I would.

There just was a recent news story about how being around burning incense frequently can cause lung damage in humans. So I would say definitely no incense around birds with their highly sensitive respiratory systems.

I have asthma and insense definately bothers me, so I wouldn't be burning it in my home.
