View Full Version : What is the climate of parrotlets natural habitat?

I've been thinking about the right conditions for my birds and decided some of the answers should be based on what the birds have evolved to deal with in the wild.

My understanding is that the various species of Parrotlet are found in dry environments (deserts) from New Mexico, USA down the Pacific coast to Peru. Is this correct?

Some other questions:

What temperatures do these habitats experience?

How dry is it there - I know New Mexico is pretty dry but I don't think Pacifics live there, how about in Peru?

Any other info on the climates?

Thanks for any help,

Art S.

I could be wrong, but I've never read New Mexico. South American... west Ecucdor and northwest Peru. I hope someone else can completely answer your question - I'm interested too!

Hmmm - here's what part of the research I just did says: The Pacific Parrotlets' native habitat is from northeastern Mexico to northern Argentina, Paraguay and along the coast of Peru

Here is a web-site that shows the Pacific Parrotlets habitat as Tropical and Subtropical Dry Forests
Do a search on the page for "Pacific Parrotlets" they are listed under the Tumbesian-Andean Valleys Dry Forests" heading.

some of the other species like the Mexican Parrotlet come for the rainforest -

If you find out more information it would be interesting to post:

I'm trying to revive this thread with a similar question. What temperature range should parrotlets be kept at? I can't find anything online about this. Any info would be great!

For medium rare I'd use 350 degrees for 3 minutes ;) :D

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Art, :D :D :D Priceless -

Alyse - I can't tell you the temperature of their wild habitat but from this forum I'm gathered our house companions should be kept at a minimum of 68 degrees Fahrenheit [20 Celsius].

Hey ya'll our birds are Americans they do not need a green card. If they were raised with a/c and cental heat they wouldn't make it in the jungle either..LOL Miss b'jo thinks she's in the amazon when we go on the porch, so do I in the summer here. LOL

Art..behave..LOL

I use 65F (18C - I think) as the minimum for overnight when they are tucked in. However the normal range I keep is 68F - 75F (20C - 23C).

'For medium rare I'd use 350 degrees for 3 minutes ;) :D'

Haha! Once I got so mad at Louie for biting the back of my neck that I threatened to make a parrotlet kabob..

and then felt more awful about that than anything else I'd said recently!
