Hi there,

I am a new member but not a new owner. I have had my parrotlet for four years and my other one for two. They share a cage that is divided as they enjoy eachothers company but are territorial. Both are females. My oldest one has laid two clutches in the span of three months (she has not been bred). She has never done this. The first time was two eggs the second time three. she is still trying to hatch this clutch. She is also having extreme amounts of diarrhea (one bowel movement is about half her size). I no longer know what to do with her as her belly is swollen and I am scared she will become egg bound. Any advice as an avian vet would be my last resort (very expensive and stressful for her) Thanks

:)

If she is having bowel movements that large and her abdomen is swollen, you need to get her to an avian vet ASAP. She is very likely suffering and may be dehydrated from the diarrhea. When you take responsibility for a pet you also need to factor in the potential costs for health care.

There really isn't much to say here except that this bird really needs to be taken to an Avian Vet (certified, of course).

Last resort or not -- that time has come. Like Lineola said, she is most likely becoming very dehydrated with the large bowel movements. A bowel movement half the bird's size is very large.

Becoming egg-bound is a serious matter and requires immediate attention by a vet if you want to save or help the bird.

I wish you the best of luck with this poor birdie and I apologize if I came off as harsh; I'm just looking into the bird's best interest :)

My old cockatiel was egg bound. I would seek vet care immediatly. She laid clutch after clutch.

Hi Rebecca! :D I am not on very often anymore, so that's why I've been MIA for the past few (well... a lot more than few) months :)

You need to post some pictures of your birdies! I bet all the old members would love to see them. ;)

I just posted my answer on another thread before I saw this one...my advise was to go to an avian vet due to the fact that she could be having trouble laying an egg...I had a budgie whose egg did not calcify and had we not caught it and got help for her it would have been fatal.

I agree with everyone here, please take her to a avian vet. I know it can be costly, but you would never forive yourself if you didnt do everything to make your pets happy, and safe. Please keep us posted, we all care...

I have to agree with all of them. Get her to a CERTIFIED avian vet ASAP. I made the fatal mistake of letting a pseudo-avian vet treat my baby Toby for his first signs of illness and by the time I actually wised up and found a certified avian vet his infection had complicated and was completely misdiagnosed in the first place giving him medicines which were way too strong which led to his demise.
Make sure the vet is CERTIFIED. I'm in Georgia and after researching in the area, I found that the price of a certified avian vet visit was not as terrifying as I had though it would be and she turned out to be the most caring, wonderful vet I've met in my life.
Please at least check around to check prices. Sometimes, it's not as scary as it seems from what you read on the internet.
