I was wondering what is the best way to set up for a freshly weaned baby? I should be going out in the next week to get my little boy. I talked to them yesterday and they said that they are down to one a day feedings and that they are going through their onry stage.
So I was wondering how I should set up his cage, do I need to remove the grate in the bottom? Have the perches and toys all low?
Any help is very much appreciated.

When I brought Kiwi how right after she was weaned...I did put the perches, food and water lower in the cage. I used a cage initially that was only about 15 ins high and placed toys and a ladder in as well. It was probably only about a week or two before she was all over and into a larger cage. I just always like to ensure that they have their balance and can manuever around okay. Can't wait to see that little boy!

When I brought each of the boys home, I put food and water in both low and high places in the cage, as well as their toys. I also put a soft washcloth out for awhile on the bottom grate, in case they preferred to nap there...didn't see them use it but there was evidence that they did! Good luck - please send pictures...
I have dealt with two young freshly weaned birds from the breeders. I would leave the grate on the bottom. Keep the perches low and only a few toys at first. It is amazing how fast they go from being clumbsy oafs to master cage climbers. As he gains confidence, raise the perches and add more toys. Have fun with your new baby. I love bonding with a new young bird. Good luck and post pictures!

When I got Scooter I was still feeding him twice a day. I didn't put the grate in, and in the HQ cage this left a big gap, so I had to put a long piece of cardboard there to keep him in. Also, I made a little cubby in a cup on its side for him with a washcloth. It was sooo cute putting him in there to sleep at night. After he wouldn't sit in the cup over night, I started draping a cloth over a ladder that was very low so that he could go under that. I did that with Marlie too, she was fully weaned when I got her. I kept everything down low so that their curiousity of toys up high wouldn't hurt them if they fell : )

Thanks everyone for the advice. I can't wait to go get him. Just a few more days. They haven't given me an exact day as to when he'll be ready. Hopefully soon though. I can't wait to start the bonding process.:D
