I have just bought a used cage. It was in dire need of cleaning and I didn't see that the finish is coming off (metal with brass? plating). Has anyone tried painting their cage? If so, was it successful and what did you use? Thank you.

I wouldn't recommend painting a cage... I can't remember the exact process but I do know that the companies do something to the paint to make it bite resistent.

I'm not sure if there is anything that could be done at home.... maybe Reta can remember...

I wouldn't paint the cage. In general, the cage should be powder coated, which I beleive is "kind of" like "baked on". I know that you can have cages re-powder coated, but have no idea what that would cost.

I think powder coating is the only way to go for bird cages. There are companies that can do this for you, but I'll bet it's way expensive! Probably cheaper to buy a new cage!

Good luck and hope you find a solution.

I wouldn't recommend it either, but if you absolutely have to paint it, please use spray paint designed specifically for baby nurseries which is non toxic. You'll have to shop around to find it.

I agree with the others on not painting the cage and can purchase a powder coated cage. I know it's hard to fit in the budget with other expenses all around us but I'm thinking it would be safer in the long run & worth your piece of mind. Good luck.

good news. A good power wash and scrub shows us that the cage is fine. I don't think the other owner ever cleaned the bars and had 'tiels that have a lot of dander.

That is good news indeed!

Well regardless of the cleaning, I just couldn't put Petie in the used cage. He fell ill the day before I was going to transfer him and then I just got creepy that he might pick-up some God-forbidden germ....the long and short of it is his new cage should be here soon and I don't have to worry. Here's what I ordered:

If there are no hidden charges, then this guy has incredibly good pricing for shipping to Canada. I'll keep you posted once I get it. I also had him checked out and this is an A&E cage, not a knock-off.

Petie will love the cage. Kiwi has that cage except with two front doors. I have the sand color so it blends in whatever room I would put her. My frends laugh when they see such a huge cage with all the toys and ropes, etc. and expect to see a huge bird and then in comes Kiwi.
the cage was not too bad to put together. My son helped me and it was about 20 minutes. I totally relate about not using the other cage and with Petie not feeling well...I'd do the same thing.
