View Full Version : Parrotlets and budgies housed together
Hi everyone,
My fiancé and I are planning to build an outdoor aviary in our garden. I would like it to house a number of budgies, but since I've also completely fallen in love with the parrotlet species, it would be great if I could house a pair of parrotlets in it, too.
In The Parrotlet Handbook it says that one shouldn't keep more than one pair of parrotlets in the same aviary since they tend to be aggressive to their own kind. However, I have read that one pair of parrotlets could be housed with e.g. lovebirds or cockatiels. Do you think they could also be housed with budgies?
Thanks in advance! :)

I would ONLY house 2 different species in the same aviary if it is VERY large and has multiple spots for food and water all over the aviary.
Budgies can't stand a chance against a parrotlet, and all it takes is one time for the parrotlet to get angry and chase after a budgie and do some serious damage.
I would say if you are going to do an aviary have 1 side for the budgie and 1 side for the p'lets and don't let them play together unless you are there to watch.
I would never recommend having a cockatiel housed with a parrotlets. P'lets would bully them to no ends since cockatiels are so laid back. Lovebirds I would see some serious injuries happening if they got into a fight. both are territorial and both have a hard bite...

Also, make sure you build it really well. I like to have pets inside and safe. Outdoors there are so many dangers. Just think about the weather, cats, hawks, coyotes, etc.

I am planning a very large outdoor aviary myself, I have parrotlets, canaries, budgies, and lovebirds. I will introduce one at the time to the avairy, and then with a set of birds. I plan on doing this over a good deal of time, at least the guys will know the lay of the land and areas where if needed they can go to get out of someones way.. the only one I am really concerned about is Sweet Pea. aka Monster. she might be last in the equation. It will be big enough that I can divide if needed.. and will have the dividers made ahead of time.
Thank you for your replies.
It sounds like I have to be very cautious about housing budgies and parrotlets together. The aviary we're planning to build is going to be rather large and I will make sure it can be divided if any signs of problems should occur.

Hi Lina,
I would love if you would share your process and plans, and pictures during and when it's finished (if you don't mind!). I bet your aviary is going to be awesome. What lucky birds you have!

I'm surprised to hear this about the cockatiel. The woman I met a month ago whose parrotlet Maui actually made me fall in love with parrotlets, had her little guy housed with a cockatiel named Buckwheat. They lived together in an indoor avairy and were quite happy together she said, even snuggling together at night.

cockatiels are constantly bullied in aviaries with budgies, and as we all know.... p'lets are big brats. I'm not saying it ISN'T possible, but it's not something I woud recommend.
