I thought it would be interesting to compile the weights of our birds to see what's normal in captivity and if there is any effects based on age and flight status.

I'll go first:

Sparky: 28 grams, 8 years old, fully flighted.

MeMe: 29 grams, 8 years old, fully flighted.

Hopefully if we get enough participation, we will see some trends.

Art S.

Chipper weighs 30 grams. She is clipped a bit, but she flies just fine! She is a year and a half old.http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v492/Sally11/PICT0533400.jpg

Just wanted to bring this back to the top - what do your birds weigh?

Chipper weighs the same. I do not clip her now, fully flighted. But then, she always was.

How often should they be weighed? weekly? daily?

Alyse,

We get them weighed when we take them to the vet.

I started this thread because not all vets know what is correct for parrotlets. Having a number of us chime in will generate a range that will prove useful.

I was thinking about getting my own scale, but since it sounds like you guys don't weigh your own and it's not a daily thing, maybe I'll buy some more toys instead! :D

Or do what my wife does - buy cotton string and make pompoms - they like the pompoms better than any storebought toy!

I just got my new scale in the mail today! She weighs 29.5 grams. It is accurate and very nice. It is important to know what they weigh when healthy for the times they may get ill. I had to get a new scale, my other was not a good one.http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v492/Sally11/scale300.jpg
