Last night Satie flew out of her cage and into Ike's. They had been doing so well, preening and feeding each other, I let them sleep together in the big cage. I came back from work today though and Ike was chasing her around in the cage and defending his food dish against her. :( I had her out on her own tonight and she still wanted to go into the cage with him, but he was biting her feet. He was being nice some of the time and preening her though, and I saw her preen him for the first time today. I saw the first hint of aggressiveness from Ike yesterday, after he tried to mate with her and she shot him down. I guess she bruised his ego.

I don't exactly know what to make of their behavior. Of course if he isn't sharing his food dish with her they aren't ready to live together. Is it weird though that they are so eager to spend time together, but he is mean when they are actually together?

Ike is protecting "his" territory - IMO before putting them together they should already have formed a close bond and be put into "neutral" territory - so neither one thinks its theirs. That would be a new cage or a Totally changed out one so the cage can become both of theirs.

Here is what I wrote to Rebecca on what I did with mine.

One thing I didn't mention in Rebecca's post was moving the location of the cage when the birds were first placed together. I moved mine three different times - I knew the locations would be temporary but wanted to make the cage seem like a new place for Rupert since it was originally his cage. I eventually moved it back to its original location.

The combination of all new items in the cage and new and different locations of the cage worked out great for the introduction of my two. I left the cage in its new location for a week at a time.
