I have two... the first little guy (green male) came from Bird Camp in the city. He is great, tame and so sweet...

I got the second (blue male) at a bird store in NJ (Totowa, can't remember the name)... they had 4 hand fed babies for sale....

They are great with each other and play all day...

I got Indie from The Paterson Bird Store in Totowa, NJ! I was living in Westchester, NY then. Great store with tons of supplies and nice staff. If you Google the store name their website will pop up. :D

When I spoke to the owner of Parrotlet World I wanted to know a little bit of how the birds were raised. I asked him about feeding all the birds. He told me that it takes him and all the large breeders about 7 seconds to feed a chick. It almost sounded like he had a puppy mill type of an operation. I feel that there should be more interaction with the bird when he is being fed. I like to spend about 5 minutes with each bird and let them take the food at their own pace rather then just shooting it into their crop.

A breeder should spend time with each of his babies. They should be handled and played with so that making contact with us humans is a pleasant experiance for the bird instead of just being put into some type of holding cage or pen.

A young bird should at least be taught to step up and step down so that it becomes easy to handle them when playing with them or taking them out or putting them back in their cage.

I also am concerned with the shipping of young birds, are they fully weaned before the are shipped. Its very stressful on a bird to have them shipped cross country. I had a bird get sick during shipping, It cost $1800.00 in vet bills before the bird recovered. The breeder that shipped the bird offered to replace the sick bird.

How can anyone let a bird die without trying to save it no matter what the cost is.

There are a lot of good local breeders around. I would try to get a bird from them before I would have one shipped cross country.

Yeah this is why I bought from Phil and not from a place like "little tweet"
I got that impersonal feeling from them just reading their website
that the birds were a product waiting to be "in stock"

People may or may not have had positive experiences with birds from websites. (I can't speak from experience) but I'm positive that it makes a world of difference having a hand-fed babies that gots handled and acclimated to humans from the start.

see this is my problem. I have been looking for a little over a month and i keep getting sent back to parrotlet world. i asked my avian vet and he sent me to a bird store in long island. I was trying to stay clear of bird stores because i did want a hand fed baby. i don't know i guess i will keep looking it's so hard to find breeders in the city.

I'm from Long Island and familiar with most of the bird stores. What bird store did you visit I may know the breeder that they use. Also what type and color parrolet are you looking for.

honestly i would really love a blue male... i just love the light and dark blue mixed... i called parrots of the world in loing island and they wanted $500.00 which i thought was a little expensive. I have seen tons of breeders that were only low 3's. i would be willing to drive to long island.. at this point i will be willing to drive anywhere.

Try these folks, they are just outside NYC.

With that being said, I don't know anything about them.

I would just like to clarify for you that bird store birds are often hand-fed. At Paterson Bird Store, they usually acquire their birds from breeders who have handled and hand-fed their birdies. And you can always ask the store which ones are/aren't hand-fed. Another bird store you might want to check out is The Bird Jungle in White Plains, NY (if you're willing to travel that far). They usually have parrotlets. Good luck with your search!

I know everyone's experience with certain breeders are never the same but i would just like to tell everyone on this forum that dealing with parrotlet world was a terrible experience.... the guy took forever to get back to me then when i gave him a deposit i haven't heard from him since. I am not saying he will do this to everyone but i just wouldn't want to deal with someone that treats me that way. nothing personal towards him.

AmandaNY - I saw your baby yesterday!! He is really cute! I went over to Birdcamp to buy my monthly supply of "toys to be destroyed" and saw the new babies... I want the little yellow female so bad, but I can't have another...

When do you pick him up? Barbara said that they are handling them all daily to keep them tame... so cute!!

I had to leave before I put a deposit on one! They know how much I love p-lets there, but they agreed that three would be too many for me..

As it goes, I'll live vicariously thru your new baby! Congrats!
