My new parrotlet Cello had a rather deprived background, no toys! Well, he had a mirror in his cage that he sat next to a lot, and one hanging toy he never played with that hung there for a year or more. I didn't put the mirror in the new cage.
So, he's not familiar with toys and I'd like to help him start to play. I made a swing which he does use occasionally, and there are two hanging toys he doesn't touch, plus some finger traps and little beads in one corner. Not a nibble. What he is starting to do is nibble on the edges of my sleeves. Not so bad when it's something old, but sometimes I wear things I don't want little beak holes in! I have woven collard and kale leaves through the bars, just once, but he didn't touch them.
Any suggestions?

Martini doese the same thing to me.He sits on my shoulder and chews away. I don't mind it much until he bites my cheek or tries taking my glasses off. Try getting some kind of toy with rope. Martini has a toy w/ cotton rope on it and he likes chewing on it. Just be sure there aren't any loops in it or anything for him to get caught uo in

Paulie likes plastic chain, bells on plastic chain, swings. He loves to swing and chew on thin leather strips that I use on some of his toys.

Chipper loves toys with bells, wood. LOVES her bells so much. She loves her rope, atom toy, tinkertoys, chewy rubber I will show her favorites. She plays all the time. She sits behind her shaggy swing to watch outside, loves that swing too. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v492/Sally11/PICT0735500.jpg

Now Chipper is not what I would call a deprived bird! :)

both my birds came from a bit deprived backgrounds...
Diablo didnt need much encouragement. She instantly decided my income tax filing = BIGGEST TOY EVER and reduced much of it to shreddies screeching with what I thought was rage... I weave dried palm leaf bands in her cage bars and hang palm leaf chinese lanterns from her cage ceiling and she loves to tear them apart. She never tookto anything else in her cage so I just buy her things to destroy.
I also bought her an 'in house' bird bath that she loves. If i pour water in it through the cage roof she goes berserk and tries to see the water off and then jumps in for a big old bath.
Jesus, who i've had for about 3 weeks, is really shy. He likes his mirror and... welll.. I bought him a bird buddy and he's kind of fallen for it. I bought him his own toys because he is quarantine... he likes his hoop swing, his mirror and bird buddy best...
He hasn't figured out that he can take a bath in his bird bath yet but he does drink from it... so he's not scared of it at least.
but I just keep trying different toys and seeing what he likes and dislikes. He seems happy enough, he eats tons and is really active... so i'd say if your birdie seems happy and doesn't interact much with toys, he probably just isnt' that into them...
