Hi, I'm Kimber. I'm driving down to Miami to buy my first parrotlet in the morning. I've kept and lived with various parrots, among various exotic pets, ever since birth. I have been researching parrotlets for close to two years now and finally decided the timing was right to add one to the family.
I have not picked my bird out yet, so I'm not sure what species I'll decide on; however, I have decided it will be a male. I will definitely post pictures as soon as I get him back home. They won't be great because I want to leave him be for the first few days until he settles in, but I guarantee to keep everyone updated from that point on with adorable photos of the little guy.
He will be joining my seven-year-old daughter and our two small dogs (an oversized yorkie and long-hair chihuahua) as the newest member of our family. This is the first time in my life I haven't lived in a "private zoo," as my friends like to call it. I'm an ex-primate caregiver and animal science major, as well as raised by an animal rehabilitator, horse breeder and zoo keeper. So, we've had some interesting characters in our house, including twin tiger cubs, a baby giraffe, and a pet moose. I am the first person most people in my life call if they have an abandoned/neglected animal and have experience in introductions and resocialization of exotics. I have changed my major to a very non-animal related subject, but I still have a great love for all animals (even with a particular interest in entomology) and will continue to teach my daughter everything my family and experience has taught me.
We are moving to Nashville within the month of November, so I will probably start a topic to gain any tips to making that transition as stress-free as possible for my parrotlet. My main concern is my inexperience with actual winter climate. Most of the year we can give our birds a daily outdoor visit on the screened porch, but I've never kept parrots in a normal weather setting. I know it seems like a silly thing to worry about, but I don't like relying on my common sense in areas I'm inexperienced in. :)
I'm happy to be here and thanks for having me!
