HI all -- do any of you use those commercial 'bird protector' discs that hang in the cage and are supposed to help repel mites? I used to use them with my parakeets as a kid, but don't know if they're a good idea with p'lets. Thanks!

years back I used them with my budgies but then read a similar warning that Beaker posted and took them out and haven't used them since. So my parrotlet has never had one and the parakeets haven't for a while.

Just think if your bird were to chew on it or something?? I have never seen one of these but I would not put one in for sure!

I, too, have never used them.. they seem to be more dangerous than they are worth.

I do not think parrotlets are prone to mites. I pretty much think all those products for birds for bathing, etc. are unnecessary. Plain water is all they need. (That and a nice white shirt sleeve to wipe the beak on :) )They and nature does a good job of providing them with what they need to stay clean.

I agree with everyone's comments - they are not necessary and the pesticide could be harmful.

I was warned to remove right away by a rescue in Florida.

I remember my grandmother had used them for her canary years ago...they smelled like mothballs at the time, and the odor was all over her dining room where the cage was. I think she stopped after the first one.
