OK I tried again this morning to get the muffins right as I believe it is my best shot at Mavric eating good food...
I could not find any Jiffy mix or anything.. so I bought corn meal and followed their recipe...
1 cup of flower, 3/4 cup of corn meal. I used 2 cans of baby food which equaled 1.5 cups.. (in place of milk and oil) and then I put 2 TBS of baking powder.. and 1 egg.,. I blended up the egg with the shell and a few green beans... I mixed all together and a little seed.. looked perfect..
I baked it at 400 degrees for 25 minutes, 10 minutes longer then the recipe stated... anyways it has a beautiful crust and everything looks good.. but in the middle it looks moist.. every time I make these muffins the middle never gets all fluffy like I think it should..
is this OK?? It is piping hot in the middle. I don't think it is "raw" just not fluffy.. is this OK for the birds??
Thanks

I'm racking my brain as to why the muffins would not be working. There should still be some moisture in the muffin, a biscuit would be more flakey. You may need to cook at a lower temperature for a longer period of time. Make sure the cooking rack is in the middle shelf. . .

yeah I think because it is so dense it might just need longer.. they are back into the oven until the middle is drier or it starts to burn :)

I think daddy is trying to poison me! I took them out again, and now they are hard as a rock on the outside and still a dough consistancy on the inside... GRRRRRR

Well he doesn't eat much of anything out of my hand.. so maybe they aren't that bad after all.. I put a piece in my hand and he dug through it for the seed throwing muffin everywhere and even tasting a bit I think :D
I am sure it can't make him sick.. just the moisture from the baby food and veggies I hope??

Do you by chance live at a high altitude -thus the recipe might need to be altered for altitude?

I SORT of follow the muffin mix, ha. I add SO many things to it. I add water and just as long as it is not watery, it turns out great. Chipper loves it. I think possibly could be the baby food. Watery maybe? I put the mix in, eggs, a tad of corn oil, frozen tiny veggies, sweet tater, seed, pellets maybe, and Goldenfeast blend. Kitchen SINK! ha. I mix it all and add two packs of mix. Then a bit of water. Not too much.

Thing is, as long as it is cooked through, I think birdies are not that picky. Try to not add baby food, or less of it. Good luck. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v492/Sally11/birdiebread.jpg

ok my mom bakes alot she says its the stuff in the baby food making it do that gravity pulls the liquid element from the food because the rest of it is hardened therefore if the liquid is not evaporated the center will stay soggy
simple solution when the 20 min mark has past when ur baking remove the muffin cut it in half and place back in facing upwards on a cookie pan.

tell me how it goes

I use baby food in Paulie's bread all the time...4 oz of fruit and 4 oz of some veggies, usually squash or sweet potatoes. I use a corn bread mix and add stuff until it's the same consistancy as if it were for us. I put in 2 eggs and add pellets and wheat germ, and leave out any liquid that's called for b/c the baby food takes the place of the liquid.

I am sad to report that although I was SO enthusiastic about making bird muffins for Buddy-and put TONS of love into baking them...he inspected the seeds on top, grabbed a bite and tossed it to the floor. I even broke off pieces and offered them to him. He grabbed those and tossed them on the floor. I even did the Mom trick of pretending to eat it myself to show him how good and yummy it was.

Then I left one in a ramekin in his cage today to see if he would nibble while we were at work. nothing.

He's a spoiled brat. He only wants seed. And he meeps (chirps) his head off when he's low on his favorite seeds until we come and fill his cup again. I know that we're only reinforcing his behavior by doing this-but when we refused to do it one time, he stopped eating and that's not the solution either. He's like a toddler throwing a temper tantrum. We don't know what to do to make him stop this bad behavior.

HELP!!
